I've never heard of Art Blakey before but if this was a battle I think he won it. Amazing, sounds so clean his playing.

Everyone wants to call this a competition. Ginger Baker has always thought of himself as a jazz drummer. What this is, is like having a band with two lead guitarists. Every now and then, we cede to the other guitar player. Watch intently, when Baker does a solo, Art fills and when Art solos, Baker fills. Two ridiculously good drummers. Not a competition but a "man, you good", 'dude, you good too'.

When ginger solos there is a form to it, I find most jazz drum solos empty of form. Apparently ginger first learned his rhythms by riding the London trains then Africa of course. Check out what ginger did in early 80's with bill laswell et al eg:Dust to Dust, some of his best stuff hardly heard. I think gingers pinaccle was with air force and his beautiful drumming on blind faith. He is a stylist and his drumming co-composes the song. He deserved co-write royalties with cream

Just an update : Art was fully competent in many, many drum:’/ percussion techniques - appreciated why Ginger (Pete) was in awe of him. Sheer style accompanied all the years of hard work, practice that went into the mix. My brother was an excellent drummer, gifted from infant years on - so I’ve insight into ‘practice time’ Love this video & Ginger facially expressing his love & respect of Art, the man. These guys both have uncommonly good ears. Its not that they choose the right thing to play, they could choose many different things. Whatever they choose to play sounds authentic. I'd say it was like them from when they first got on the kit.

I think Blakey’s continuous ‘tone” on his symbal wins and is over the brain of a rock star who thinks mostly in rhythm (beats).

The drums in this make me stand up to attention and salute the gods of music before again attempting unsuccessfully to run head first thru brick walls. When he hits that one so hard he's leaping out of his seat my heart skips a beat in admiration of how he's throwing his whole life into those drums at that moment in time. What a thrill for any audience. Soulful AF Motivating. Love Wavves too.

Good Lord. Two legends. Art Blakey and Ginger Baker. Amazing.

When asked if he'd take part in one of Baker's exhibitions (intended to puff up his declared superiority over his peer group of rock players) Buddy Rich said he wouldn't waste his time with "that asshole" but if Baker wanted, he'd swap bands for one gig without rehearsal, saying it wouldn,'t be a problem for him. The carroty one evidently thought it wise not to respond. Buddy would likely have pissed all over him even more than Art does in this video.
